I honestly think the slogan is a bit too much but …. I will still keep it.

Welcome back to article2 of this series published on 19 Jan 2022.

Battle 2: What is finance?

Today’s experiment is actually pretty revealing.

I honestly can’t find a clear definition of what is finance from the textbooks of Basics of Finance, which in itself, is pretty weird.

I did try and search for a different combination of the keywords, such as “what is finance”, or “finance is defined as”, or “the definition finance”, or “finance is defined as”. All comes empty which why in exam condition, I might come up dry and leave my answer blank.

But here is a good news for a student taking an open book exam. You may not score full mark but at least, you may score something with the help of Second Intelligence.

Learning materials

The learning material is the first google search result of “basics of finance pdf” which gives us the below.

The reasoning given by Second Intelligence

The below is a screenshot of the Second Intelligence which gives the answer as per poster above.

The third section of Second Intelligence does tell us exactly how it got the answer but just to be thorough, I then traced the answer to the original PDF as per below:

I can argue that “the development level of the payment and settlement systems” may not be the exact definition but as someone with a master degree in finance, I think the answer does make sense, or in another word, finance indeed related to a system where money change hand, i.e. “payment and settlement”.

So, what do you think? What would you answer the question of “what is finance” if you were only to learn from this textbook? Did you get a better answer compared to the machine (within 2minutes which is how long the machine takes)?

Background of this series (if you have not read already)

I built Second Intelligence simply as a side project, without any intention of ever taking it seriously. (Sorry my Second Intelligence, but I know you don’t have feelings, even if you can sometimes beat me at learning! And ouch!)

But the result blew my mind and exceeded my expectation way too much for me to dismiss the idea of turning it into a SaaS project.

But before I get overly proud of it (like how parents feel about their proudest creation), I want to gauge how others feel about the product, the real use case of it and whether it could indeed create value for its users. I do have a roadmap planned ahead and will commit more of my weekends to it if it is well received. So please feel free to review and share your thoughts.

I will test Second Intelligence regularly and journal it below as I go. If you are interested trying yourself, please feel free to give it a go too and provide feedback in the comments.
